U'nateneh Tokef: Who Shall Live? Who Shall Die? with Rabbi Stuart Altshuler

Thursday, August 26, at 7:00 p.m. on Zoom

Join with our new Rabbi Stuart Altshuler as we prepare for the High Holidays through an evening of discussion and introspection.

U'nateneh Tokef: Who shall Live? Who shall Die? The theology of the Yamim Noraim from the most famous piyyut/liturgical piece of the High Holiday machzor. When was this central part of the High Holiday service written, by whom and why? Through the prism of the U'netaneh Tokef prayer we will clarify Judaism's attitude about afterlife, it's understanding of theodicy--justifying God in the face of "bad things happening to good people” and understand the power of the backdrop in Jewish history when this prayer was written and by whom. The themes of God's Malchuyot (kingship), Zichronot (Redemption), and Shofarot (Revelation), the three central themes of the Musaf service for Rosh Hashanah are also featured in this brilliant medieval composition.
