USY

Sarasota Temple usy2United Synagogue Youth (USY) is the official youth movement of Conservative Judaism. Our chapter is called SRQUSY (Sir-Q-Z) and is affiliated with Temple Beth Sholom. USY offers high school students the opportunity to immerse themselves in various Jewish and social activities while forming friendships that will last a lifetime. We seek to bring teenagers together around organized activities that promote learning, fellowship, growth, leadership, and responsibility. Our goals also include a better understanding of conservative Judaism, Jewish education, involvement in the synagogue and community at  large, as well as incorporating how to live a Jewish life in the secular world.

There are many exciting events planned each month. USY meets two to three times per month and the USY Executive Board creates and implements programs under the direction and approval of the Youth Director. Programs are a mix of social, cultural, religious, community service, fundraising, and entertaining activities. Beyond the "in house" programs, there are opportunities to get involved in the Mercaz sub-region through conventions and in the HaNegev region (composed of chapters from the seven southeast states) through Yom Disney (Disney Day), and regional conventions.

Sarasota Temple usy3Temple Beth Sholom offers USYers an opportunity to earn “Scholar Dollars" which can be applied to offset the cost of youth programs. This program is offered to students and their families through the Temple Beth Sholom Sisterhood Sarah Green Memorial Fund. Students earn scholar dollars through activities such as tutoring Paver Religious School students, working in the Temple Office, etc. The hours must be logged and students earn $5.00 in scholar dollars for each hour worked.  These scholar dollars can then be redeemed for subsidies (not to exceed the amount of scholar dollars earned) to attend approved youth activities, including conventions, transportation, monthly events, and summer programs.  Please contact our Youth Director, Shiri Rozenberg at srozenberg@templebethsholomfl.org for more information.

There are many ways for your family to become involved with our Youth Department. If you are a parent looking for a volunteer opportunity, consider joining the Temple Beth Sholom Youth Commission. Contact the Paver Religious School at (941) 552-2780 to discuss opportunities for your participation.

Sarasota Temple SRQUSYFinally, there are many wonderful summer programs associated with USY, including USY on Wheels (a bus teen tour across the United States and Canada) and USY Pilgrimage (international teen tours in Israel, Spain, Poland, and Eastern Europe).
