Druze professor appointed ambassador to New Zealand
A Druze Professor of Hebrew Literature, Naim Araidi, has been appointed as Israel’s ambassador to New Zealand. Araidi is not Israel’s first Druze ambassador; Walid Mansour was posted to Vietnam and Reda Mansour served in Ecuador.
Professor Araidi said: "After years of representing the State of Israel unofficially, it would be a great privilege for me to do so in an official capacity and show Israel's beautiful side, as well as the coexistence that despite all the hardships can only be maintained in a true democracy."

Basil by the Tree-ful

Love just-picked basil in Italian dishes? An Israeli company has introduced a long-lasting basil tree for years of fresh herbs on demand. Normally basil has a short shelf life, and the plant rarely lives longer than a year. One of the company’s first grafted trees is already five years old and is doing well. USAID awards a three-year grant to a Bedouin professor’s peace-building project between Israeli and Palestinian
human-services providers.
Diplomats haven’t made many inroads in relations between the Arab and Jewish populations of Israel. A Bedouin-Arab professor of social work believes better results would come from the collective wisdom of the educators and mental-health professionals who understand the situation’s everyday impact on those populations.
